Meet the Artist

I am a small-batch ceramics artist based in Sonoma County, California. My practice is rooted in an appreciation for functional ware and the softening of our daily rituals. From tea time to meal time, I enjoy bringing comfort to the home with handmade pottery.

My main body of work is made using porcelain. I’ve come to love working with this type of clay for both its simplicity and complexity. It’s one of the more fragile clay bodies to work with, requiring patience and a softer engagement when throwing. As it dries, it becomes very delicate, requiring extra care with surface technique and attachments.

One surface technique you’ll see in my work is called “water-etching.” This process requires even more patience and delicacy because it requires the clay to dry completely before painting the surface design with a liquid resist. Once dry and in a brittle state, I use a wet sponge to delicately pull away the layers of dry clay to leave a raised surface design. To me, it feels similar to ocean waves pulling away at the rocks and sand.

Through my practice, I find the complexity and fragility of the process is reflective of the complexity and fragility of humans. I am challenged, humbled, softened, and grounded throughout each stage. The final product is always a reflective moment I take pause in. Each piece is something that has left a unique mark on me in this world, and something I hope others find joy in.
